Solar roofs are becoming popular here in California. We are seeing them more frequently and some of these roof systems have been around for a while. These were much more expensive when they first came on market, so there were third party companies who would lease and have the owners pay pre-determined rates for the duration of the lease.
Some of these rates were reasonable back then, but not so much today as we see more use of renewable energy sources and now can sell some power back to the utility companies. This option was not available back then. Hence, we see some people paying ridiculous rates. Solar roofs were supposed to help reduce utility bills, not pay more.
The simplest solution is to deal with buying a home where the solar roofs are owned outright. But if there is a lease situation, look through the contract to see if there is a generation component which requires the home owner to pay rates that are not market rates.
Now with electric cars and so many battery operated devices, we will be using more electricity, not less.
Home Buyers, pay attention to these lease situations or you will be paying a lot of money for your electricity.
